Carnival is one of the most fun and colorful festivities of the year, and in Mallorca it is lived with great intensity. Popularly known as 'els Darrers dies', carnival in Mallorca refers to the days before the Christian Lent, which this year is brought forward to March 28. Therefore, sa Rua and sa Rueta, the parades of floats and comparsas that travel the streets of the island, will be held on Sunday, February 11 and Sunday, February 4, respectively.

Sa Rueta: the carnival of the little ones

Sa Rueta is the children's carnival, where children dress up in costumes and participate in a parade full of joy and fantasy. Sa Rueta is usually scheduled for a Sunday morning, specifically from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. The main event is held in Palma, but there are other localities that organize their own versions of sa Rueta, such as Inca, Manacor or Sóller.

In Palma, sa Rueta has a common route, which passes through La Rambla, c. de La Riera, c. de Unió, plaça Joan Carles I, avinguda de Jaume III and paseo del Born. During the route, there is animation, music, and workshops for the little ones. In addition, the City Council of Palma organizes every year acostume contest, with different categories and prizes.

Sa Rua: the carnival of the grown-ups

Sa Rua is the carnival of adults, where you can enjoy the creativity, humor and social criticism of the floats and troupes that parade around the island. Sa Rua is celebrated on the Sunday following sa Rueta, in the afternoon. Like sa Rueta, the most multitudinous parade is the one in Palma, but there are other towns that celebrate sa Rua with a lot of participation and atmosphere, such as Alcúdia, Calvià or Pollença.

In Palma, sa Rua follows the same itinerary as sa Rueta, but with more spectacle and fun. The City Council of Palma also organizes a contest of floats and comparsas, with different modalities and prizes, which are awarded at the end of the parade in the plaça Joan Carles I. In addition, the Saturday before sa Rua, the carnival of s'Arenal is celebrated, with a parade along the promenade and an after party on the beach.
